Can any other food, person, hand, utensil, equipment, work surface or surrounding contaminate the food we are preparing, cooking, storing or serving?
Are the people,
Utensils,
Equipment,
Work surfaces and
Surroundings clean enough and
Being used in a way that keeps our food safe?

1. When do we ask this question?
We ask it whenever food is being handled.
While cutting vegetables.
While preparing raw chicken or fish.
While cooking.
While transferring food from one container to another.
While portioning or serving.
While cleaning equipment and work surfaces.
Even when food is simply waiting for its next use.
At any of these moments, we ask:
“Kya aas-paas ki koi cheez mere food ko unsafe kar sakti hai?”

2. Who should be asking this question?
Everyone in the kitchen.
Because contamination does not recognize job titles.
A helper's hand can touch food.
A cook uses knives and chopping boards.
A senior chef moves between different preparation areas.
Cleaning staff handle surfaces and equipment that food may later come in contact with.
Everyone may therefore either protect food or unknowingly become the reason it gets contaminated.
The responsibilities will differ by level; we will deal with those later.
For now, everybody needs to learn to see the possibility.

3. Why are we asking this question?
Because food does not become unsafe only because something is wrong with the food itself.
Perfectly good food can become unsafe because of something around it.
Raw food can affect cooked food.
Hands can carry contamination.
A knife or chopping board can carry something from one food to another.
A dirty work surface can affect otherwise good food.
Equipment may look clean from outside but have food residues in parts that come into contact with food.
Even water, cloths, containers and the immediate surroundings can become a route through which contamination travels.
So this question widens our attention:
Don't only look AT the food.
Look AROUND the food.

4. What purpose does this question serve?
It helps us understand a very important kitchen reality:
Food lives in an environment.
It is constantly coming into contact with people,
Other foods,
Utensils,
Containers,
Machines,
Work surfaces and
Surroundings.
Therefore safe food requires a safe circle around the food.
Our earlier questions asked:
Do I know this food and its story?
Is it being kept safely?
Now Question 3 asks something different:
“While this food is here, can something else make it unsafe?”
That is the whole purpose of this question.

5. What can happen if we don't ask this question?
We may take great care of the food itself and still allow contamination to reach it from somewhere else.
Raw and ready-to-eat food may affect each other.
The same hands, utensils or surfaces may unknowingly carry contamination from one activity to another.
A perfectly good preparation may become unsafe after it has already been cooked.
And this can be difficult to notice because the food may continue to look, smell and taste completely normal.
That is why our third Self-Evaluation Question becomes:
Can anything around this food make it unsafe?
Or, in the simplest kitchen language:
“Food theek hai.
Par kya aas-paas bhi sab theek hai?”
I think this gives Question 3 a very distinct territory:
Q1 is about knowing the food,
Q2 about protecting it while kept, and
Q3 about everything that can contaminate it while we work with it.
