Pineapples: Once upon a Time the Ultimate Status Symbol
Fun Facts
"Pineapples were rentable in 1700s Europe. In 18th century England, a single pineapple could cost £5,000 (about $8,000 today) - more than a laborer's lifetime earnings. They were imported via dangerous sea voyages from the Caribbean, and most rotted before arrival. Middle-class hosts could rent one for evening parties to display on their dining tables (but not eat!).
Time Pass
Some even hired "pineapple guards" to prevent guests from sneaking a taste.
